Breaking Radio Silence - The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company Newsletter

Greetings everyone and welcome to the ARTC newsletter, published on or around the first Tuesday of each month! The purpose of a newsletter is to bring news, so let’s begin with news about…

Live Performances:
ARTC is pleased to announce that we will have guest violinist Paul Mercer with us for The House Across the Way! A talented and innovative musician, Paul has appeared with the Changelings, Jill Tracy and her Malcontent Orchestra, and The Ghosts Project, among many others. He will be joining longtime ARTC composer, pianist, and synthesizer Brad Weage in what is sure to be a stunning duet, wrapping up Kelley S. Ceccato’s story of the romance between a grieving young man and the spirit of Hope Caudle.

The House Across the Way will accompany our feature presentation, The Last Dragon to Avondale (also on Audible.com) by Thomas E. Fuller. This show is a benefit for the Georgia Aquarium, with 25% of ticket sales going to support their research program for endangered and threatened species.

The Last Dragon to Avondale with The House Across the Way
March 27 at 8:00pm
March 28 at 2:30pm
Special Musical Guests: Rooke and Paul Mercer!
Tickets: $10
Special offer: FREE admission to the visually impaired with half-price admission for their sighted friends and family!

The roar of an approaching subway train becomes a different kind of roar and the train becomes a creature of quicksilver and flames. A case of nerves? Or the defiant cry of a creature older than humanity?

In The Last Dragon to Avondale, Thomas E. Fuller told a story of suspense and mystery through the magic of audio drama. In so doing he also speculated on what unique adaptations endangered species might be forced to exhibit to continue their very survival. ARTC is pleased to benefit the Georgia Aquarium in their study of endangered species by contributing 25% of total ticket sales to this cause.

Special musical guest, Rooke!

Also included, The House Across the Way by Kelley S. Ceccato featuring guest violinist Paul Mercer and Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: The Colour of the Shadow of the Outsider Over the Mountain of Madness Out of Space by Ron N. Butler.

Handy reference link for the ARTC performance calendar.

Studio Productions:
ARTC is pleased to announce that we will be returning to our usual haunt, Audio Craft Studio, where Henry Howard will once again be providing recording engineering services for us. We always get great sound out of Henry and Audio Craft and we’re really excited to be bringing our latest batch of dramatic audio back to a place that can rightly be called home.

And don’t forget our already extensive catalog!
Think CDs are old hat? ARTC is available by download at Audible.com, iTunes, and Amazon!

Getting Involved:
Ever wanted to help out ARTC but you weren’t sure how? Email us and let us know! There’s all kinds of things that can be done from anywhere in the world. Or if you have an idea for something you’d like to help out with, let us know that, too! We’re always eager to welcome new people into our fold in whatever way works best for them!

ARTC Podcast:
The ARTC podcast for February featured Omnilingual by H. Beam Piper, adapted for audio by Daniel Taylor. Coming on March 11, The Worst Good Woman in the World by Kelley S. Ceccato. Get a taste of Kelley’s writing style before you come to the show at the end of March. There will also be a selection from our musical guest Rooke!

Tune in on the second Thursday of each month at 8pm for more free audio drama from ARTC!

ARTC’s next live performance will be at the Academy Theatre where we will present The Last Dragon to Avondale (also on Audible.com) by Thomas E. Fuller.

Here’s the gory details:

March 27 at 8:00pm

Musical Guest: Rooke!
Tickets: $10

This will be a benefit performance for the Georgia Aquarium where 25% of our ticket sales will go to their 4R program!

In The Last Dragon to Avondale, Thomas E. Fuller told a story of suspense and mystery, creating a sense of fear in the audience as an unlikely circumstance leads to a novel conclusion.  In so doing, however, he also examined the plight of the endangered species and what unique adaptations they might be forced to exhibit to continue their very survival.

ARTC is pleased to benefit the Georgia Aquarium in their own study of endangered species and species survival through the 4R Program by contributing 25% of total ticket sales to this cause.

Also joining us for these performances will be special musical guest, Rooke.  Performing rarely these days, they’re an endangered species in their own right.

Also included in this performance will be The House Across the Way by Kelley S. Ceccato and Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: The Colour of the Outsider over the Mountain of Madness out of Space and one or two other surprises as well!

Handy reference link for the ARTC performance calendar.

Breaking Radio Silence - The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company Newsletter

Happy New Year! Greetings everyone and welcome to the ARTC newsletter, published on or around the first Tuesday of each month!  The disclaimer fulfills its purpose this month as a variety of things conspired to keep your newsletter unpublished, but things are back on track now…

The purpose of a newsletter is to bring news, so let’s begin with news about…

Thanks!
We say it, but it bears repeating. Thanks to everybody who listens and keeps the spirit of imagination alive. Remember, we’re here for you, so feel free to write and let us know how we’re doing. We love fan mail, constructive criticism, and suggestions for how we can improve.

ARTC on the air!
As reported in our Station Identification supplemental newsletter, after years of having to shuffle our feet awkwardly whenever asked the question “What station are you on?” we finally have a legitimate answer!

ARTC can now be found on WGUN, 1010AM, here in Atlanta on Saturdays and Sundays at 7:00pm. Tune in Saturday nights for our as-yet-untitled comedy half-hour and then again on Sunday nights for Into the Labyrinth, a festival of horror, suspense, science fiction, and the macabre. There’s going to be lots of Lovecraft, Heinlein, and some material that hasn’t yet made its way into the studio yet.

Can’t pick the station up where you live? Stream the broadcast online!

We’re really excited about this opportunity. Look for more announcements and information as the shows evolve. Oh, and if you have a suggestion for what to call the comedy half-hour, send it our way!

Live Performances:
ARTC’s next live performance will be at Chattacon on January 23 where we will bring you A Ship Named Francis by John Ringo and Victor Mitchell, adapted for audio by Daniel Taylor. One of our most popular recent adaptations, which has received rave reviews at LibertyCon and Dragon*Con.

Space.The Final Frontier.

Or so they say.

Writers of speculative fiction have given us
glimpses of a future in
which travel to other
planets is
commonplace.

Sleek space ships
propelled at speeds
faster than light itself;
Aboard them, a new
generation of pioneers
and explorers, the
best and brightest of

humanity.

But what about those
who aren’t the best
and brightest? Where are they?

Also included in the Chattacon show will be Rory Rammer: The Angel of Destruction and SWATting the Books, both by Ron N. Butler.

In March we’ll wrap up the Academy Theatre 2009-2010 season with The Last Dragon to Avondale (also on Audible.com)by Thomas E. Fuller, with special musical guest Rooke!

More details to be included in future newsletters. As always, expect more great audio drama and occasional musical guests at these public performances!

Handy reference link for the ARTC performance calendar.

Studio Productions:
We’re in pre-production now for our most ambitious studio schedule in years. Been to a live performance or heard the podcast and wonder why some of that great material isn’t available on CD yet? We’re going to correct that. And we’re looking to speed up the production cycle with our new sound effects library and some new studio techniques. Some of the stuff you can look forward to in the coming year?

The Call of Cthulhu and The Colour Out of Space by H. P. Lovecraft, adapted for audio by Ron N. Butler
Nothing-at-All and The Worst Good Woman in the World by Kelley S. Ceccato
The Brotherhood of Damn Sassy Mutants by Sketch MacQuinor
and much, much more!

The ARTC podcast for December featured a really low-key podcast with a bit of holiday poetry by Doug Kaye and a touching song by Juliana Finch! Next up for January, we return to those far off, future days of 1985AD, after men have landed on the moon! Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: Enemies Within! by Ron N. Butler!

Tune in on the second Thursday of each month at 8pm for more free audio drama from ARTC!

Breaking Radio Silence - The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company Newsletter

Greetings everyone and welcome to the ARTC newsletter, published on or around the first Tuesday of each month!  The purpose of a newsletter is to bring news, so let’s begin with news about…

The Holidays
Whether it’s Christmas, Hannukah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, or even Giftmas, it’s that time of year again. The time of year when ARTC puts on An Atlanta Christmas, people get pressured by retailers to spend money, and there’s lots of pretty lights around.

Speaking of spending money…

Audio drama makes a great gift. Seriously, give the gift of imagination and Adventure in Sound this season. There are three great ways to get our stuff.

Come see An Atlanta Christmas live! We’ll have CDs for sale in the lobby at the Academy Theatre. See the below show announcement for time and admission details.

This is our favorite method, because it means we get to see our fans in person!

Mail order! Now, obviously, this is a bit more time-sensitive. If you want your stuff to arrive by Christmas then I’d recommend you head on over to artc.org right now! Audible.com. This is for folks who want the immediacy of a download or who wait until the last minute to pick out a gift.

ARTC’s stuff

Gift Certificates

And don’t forget Woodrow’s Mercantile (hosted by Cafe Press) for all your ARTC apparel needs!

Got other things on your list besides audio drama? You can still help us out! If you plan to buy anything from Amazon.com, head on over to artc.org FIRST and click on the ad down at the bottom (or just use that Amazon link to the left there). You’ll go straight to Amazon’s site, ARTC will get a portion of any money you spend at Amazon, and it doesn’t cost you one red cent!

Happy holidays!

Live Performances:
ARTC’s next live performance will be at the Academy Theatre on December 5 and 6 where we will once again bring you An Atlanta Christmas by Thomas E. Fuller. If you’ve never heard this one, then you’re in for a real Southern treat as we bring you a regional look at the holidays throughout history. Brimming with that unique Southern perspective, An Atlanta Christmas will bring back memories of Christmases past, our city’s past, and our past in this family-friendly celebration of the season.

Welcome, welcome one and all to our family Christmas! To every family Christmas that ever was or ever will be! Behold the traditional Christmas tree weighted down with ornaments and decorations! Every five year old’s Christmas morning writ large and come true!

For one day a year, the Theater of the Mind gives way to a warm hearth and a bowl of gingerbread – and when from the roof there arises a clatter, it’s neither a faceless monster nor a Martian.

It’s Christmas.

This year’s lineup:

  • The Tree Comes to Atlanta
  • Mr. Currier, Mr. Ives, and All That Snow
  • Cut-Out Christmas
  • Davy Crockett and Me
  • Are You Lonely Tonight?
  • The Legend of the Poinsettia
  • Bumpers Crossroads: Rose’s Fruitcake
  • The Experts
  • Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: A Visit From St. Rex
  • Christmas on the High Seas

Showtimes: Saturday, December 5: 8:00pm

Sunday, December 6: 2:30pm

Admission: FREE

(Donations accepted at the door. Suggested donation $10. 25% of all donations collected at the door will go to the Center for the Visually Impaired here in Atlanta as our gift to them.)

And as an added bonus, we’ll also be participating in the Academy Theatre’s production of Felice Ramadan, A Holiday Vaudeville. A variety of takes on the winter holidays… Comedy, radio theater, dance, & Thimblerig all are part of the mix as we celebrate in a whole new way!  All of the Academy’s membership companies have been invited to participate in this event! ARTC’s contribution? Sketch MacQuinor’s Blue Hanukchristmas Carol!

In January we’ll be returning to Chattacon (programming to be announced) and in March we’ll wrap up the Academy Theatre season with The Last Dragon to Avondale (also on Audible.com)by Thomas E. Fuller.

More details to be included in future newsletters. As always, expect more great audio drama and occasional musical guests at these public performances!

Handy reference link for the ARTC performance calendar.

Studio Productions:
Sadly, we didn’t make the deadline for having the CD of An Atlanta Christmas for the holidays this year. Our desire to bring you a quality product won out over our desire to make a quick buck on the season.

We are still planning studio time for the new year, though, so look for all kinds of goodies to be released soon!

The ARTC podcast for November featured, fresh from our Dragon*Con show, the second part of The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft, adapted for audio by Ron N. Butler. If you missed it at Dragon*Con AND at the Academy Theatre, here’s your chance. But I have to tell you…we really missed you at those shows. Up next for December, a really low-key podcast that will feature a bit of holiday poetry by Doug Kaye and a touching song by Juliana Finch!

Tune in on the second Thursday of each month at 8pm for more free audio drama from ARTC!

Snippets from the Static:

  • A bunch of big-name actors have gotten together to do a full-on audio adaptation of the Bible. Could this be what it takes to make audio drama popular in the US again?
  • It’s the holidays! Time to break out the standard Christmas carols, right? Sure. Just try these on for size. (Lots more where those came from)
  • It’s the holidays! Time to buy gifts! But not these, please.
  • And now it’s time for our seemingly obligatory Loch Ness Monster link. This time, the marketing side of Nessie.

Off-dial Programming:
ARTC has had dozens, if not hundreds, of members in its run since 1984, and they don’t just do radio drama. Look for these ARTC members in performances around the Atlanta area…and beyond!

  • The Academy Theatre hosts more performances than just ARTC! Check out their performance calendar!
  • Need that special feeling that only live Christmas caroling can bring to your holiday event? Check out the Toast of Christmas Past! Owned and operated by longtime ARTC member Fiona K. Leonard, these acapella carolers can be contacted and booked by calling 404-313-3491.
  • Former ARTC President Geoffrey M. Brown in his production company, Dancing Monkey Cabaret!
  • One of ARTC’s favorite musical guests, Juliana Finch, is touring around the country. Full tour calendar here!

Greetings everyone and welcome to the ARTC newsletter, published on or around the first Tuesday of each month!  The purpose of a newsletter is to bring news, so let’s begin with news about…

Studio Productions:
We’re working hard to have An Atlanta Christmas on CD and Audible.com by the holidays. Other titles nearing completion include Throne of Shadows, Country of the Blind, and the return of Kissed by a Stranger. We’re also booking studio time for early next year.

What will we record? You tell us!

(Only the first 100 responses will be accepted due to account limitations. Want to sponsor ARTC’s surveying capabilities? Let us know!)
(Hrm…Surveymonkey…MailChimp…lotta primates around here lately…)

The Newsletter:
The first newsletter sent out via MailChimp was a smashing success! We’ve begun the process of replacing the subscription links that previously went to PHPList (our old provider) with links that go to the brand-spanking-new MailChimp signup form. As before, if you have any trouble let us know so we can make with the fixes.

  • The pictures are pretty, but we selected this link because it mentions Loch Ness and Lake Vostok and has a picture of a Shoggoth.
  • Butterflies with ears on their wings. Now everybody can enjoy a little audio drama.
  • 12 Unfinished SF novels. What’s this got to do with audio drama? Well, one reason is that we like classic SF as much as anyone. Another is that we do adaptations from time to time. The third is a secret.

Greetings everyone and welcome to the ARTC newsletter, published on or around the first Tuesday of each month!  The purpose of a newsletter is to bring news, so let’s begin with news about…

The Newsletter:
In our neverending quest to make this newsletter better for you and for ourselves, we’ve changed our distribution method once again. We were originally on YahooGroups (actually, we were with eGroups before Yahoo! acquired them) and then moved over to PHPList and now we are proud to announce we have stepped up to MailChimp! For the time being the PHPList signup form will remain in place and we will import new subscribers into MailChimp ourselves, but eventually we’ll be replacing that page with a brand new signup form full of chimpy goodness. Unlike our move from YahooGroups, existing subscribers will NOT have to resubscribe.

Live Performances:
ARTC’s next live performance will be at the Academy Theatre on October 24 and 25. If you missed The Call of Cthulhu at Dragon*Con, fear not…or actually fear a whole lot because it’s a horror piece…but what I mean is you can still see it at the next show. Also included will be Night Call by Brian Phillips and The Worst Good Woman in the World by Kelley S. Ceccato.

We will also be participating in the Free Night of Theatre! This is a nationwide event where theatres make seats available for FREE to encourage participation in the arts.

The giveaway has already started and many seats are already claimed, but stay tuned as many theatres will sometimes add seats as the event gets closer.

Check out the Free Night of Theatre website to see which theatres in your area are participating!

More details to be included in future newsletters. As always, expect more great audio drama and musical guests at these public performances!

  • We’re performing The Call of Cthulhu. This is the Scent of Cthulhu. (anybody who brings a bottle of this stuff to the show gets in free, seriously)

ARTC Merchandise
Got an ARTC T-shirt? How about a lanyard or a bumper sticker? Up to this point ARTC hasn’t produced much merch and most of it was only really available at our live shows, but now, thanks to the magic of Cafe Press, we’re branching out. Show your support for imagination and audio drama with a stylish ARTC shirt, mug, bag, or whatever else we dream up. We’ve just got the basics right now, but the product line is only going to expand from here, and feel free to send us ideas and requests!

Live Performances:
After an extended time away from the live performance stage to work on our studio projects, we’re just about to switch gears into what is, for us, the most hectic and rewarding time of the year where we try to pack more live performances into a short time than is really advisable. Here’s the latest on the lineup:

LibertyCon show: July 11, 9:00pm, Rooms A-C
Our Fair City by Robert A. Heinlein
A newspaper reporter takes on corrupt city officials with the help of a retired newsstand operator, a photographer, and…a pet whirlwind named Kitten.
Omnilingual by H. Beam Piper
Mars is being explored and a once-thriving civilization has been discovered. But with the Martians long gone, how can we decipher their now-dead language?
Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: Enemies Within! by Ron N. Butler
In this brand new episode of our longest running and most popular series, a disgraced politician from Rory’s first adventure as a Space Marshal comes back to haunt him. Featuring characters first introduced in Rory Rammer, Space Marshal: Luna Shall be Dry!

Dragon*Con shows will be on the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, September 4-7.
Longtime fans should be advised to look for us at new times and in new venues at the convention. Stop by our fan table for specific details and, as always, watch this newsletter.

The First ARTC art contest!
Well, folks, in the end we only had one submission. It was from Rachel Bowman, a member of ARTC who has already done quite a bit of artwork for us (including the cover for The Hoyden (Audible.com link) and the cover for the new Rory Rammer CD) and we thank her for her submission, which will be used in upcoming promotions for The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft, adapted for audio by Ron N. Butler. She also wins the fabulous prizes.

Any suggestions on how we can make the SECOND ARTC art contest more successful would be appreciated. Artists, what held you back? Tell us and we’ll try to make adjustments.

Studio Productions:
We will be taking pre-orders for the new CD Rory Rammer, Space Marshal at LibertyCon! (pre-orders coming to the website soon)

ARTC Podcast:
The ARTC podcast for May featured Terra Tarkington, Interstellar Nurses’ Corps: Bitch on the Bull Run by Sharon and Wendy Webb, performed live at Sci Fi Summer 2004. July’s podcast will be a look back at everyone’s favorite Space Marshal, Rory Rammer, as we celebrate the impending release of the new CD. It’s so close I can taste it.

Tune in on the second Thursday of each month at 8pm for more free audio drama from ARTC!

Snippets from the Static:

  • A while back we posted a story that was reminiscient of our performance of SWATting the Books by Ron N. Butler. Well, here’s another one.
  • At LibertyCon we will present H. Beam Piper’s story Omnilingual by Daniel Taylor, which is about a group of scientists who are exploring the remains of an ancient civilization…on Mars. One of their major challenges is trying to decipher the Martian language with no parallel language, or “bilingual”, to help them. With that in mind, here are some terrestrial scripts that have yet to be translated.
  • We all love a good alien story. Reading this article made me wonder what will happen to SF literature when and if extraterrestrial life is actually discovered. How will we view the classics in light of this new information? And what will future work look like?

Off-dial Programming:
ARTC has had dozens, if not hundreds, of members in its run since 1984, and they don’t just do radio drama. Look for these ARTC members in performances around the Atlanta area…and beyond!

Greetings everyone and welcome to the ARTC newsletter, published on or around the first Tuesday of each month!  The purpose of a newsletter is to bring news, so let’s begin with news about…

Live Performances:
LibertyCon is nearly upon us and the lineup has been (mostly) set! This year we are pleased to bring the following audio dramas to our good friends in Chattanooga, TN:

We’re also gearing up for Dragon*Con on September 4-7.
And finally, we are extremely excited to announce our second season at the Academy Theatre.
October 24-25 - The Call of C’thulhu by H. P. Lovecraft, adapted for audio by Ron N. Butler
December 5-6 - An Atlanta Christmas created by Thomas E. Fuller, expanded by the authors of the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company
March 27-28 - The Last Dragon to Avondale by Thomas E. Fuller

More details to be included in future newsletters. As always, expect more great audio drama and musical guests at these public performances!

The First ARTC art contest!
The deadline is approaching! It’s a tight race! Actually…nobody has entered. With these fabulous prizes I can only hope that people are waiting until the submission deadline to get their work in, but if that’s the case go ahead and send us an email letting us know so we’ll be on the lookout for it. Pass this along to your fast-working artist friends and let’s see what you can do! Here are the details again…

ARTC is well known for its adaptations of H. P. Lovecraft’s classic horror. With adaptations of At the Mountains of Madness, The Dunwich Horror, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and The Rats in the Walls in our CD collection and The Colour Out of Space in our live production catalog we thought we’d return to one of our earliest adaptations, The Call of C’thulhu. Originally adapted by Gerald W. Page and performed at the first Dragon*Con in 1987, the script has, unfortunately, been lost. Ron N. Butler, creator of Rory Rammer and adapter of The Colour Out of Space, among other outstanding new audio dramas, has agreed to do a brand new adaptation for us, which we will present as part of our 25th Anniversary celebration at Dragon*Con 2009.

We’d like for YOU to create the promotional poster and, eventually, CD cover art for this project. Here are the specifics:

  • Artwork should be portrait style, 3.75″ x 7.5″ with a “live” area of 3.25″ x 7″.
  • Submissions should be in jpg, gif, or png format, emailed to art@artc.org. Questions may be sent here as well.
  • Submissions should depict your vision of the short story The Call of C’thulhu by H. P. Lovecraft and must be your original work. We’ll fill in our logo, name, and showtimes afterwards.
  • Once a winner has been selected, a final version should be provided as a high-res Photoshop (psd) or TIF file of at least 300dpi.
  • One winner will receive the entire H. P. Lovecraft ARTC CD collection as well as a copy of the new Rory Rammer, Space Marshal CD.
  • Three runners-up will receive a copy of the new Rory Rammer, Space Marshal CD.
  • Artwork will be properly credited, but becomes the property of the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company.
  • Submission deadline: June 7, 2009

Studio Productions:
In addition to the new Rory Rammer CD that will be coming out very soon, we’re also pleased to announce that our storytelling release, Tales From the Dark River will be on Audible.com soon! We’re also hard at work on An Atlanta Christmas, Throne of Shadows, and we’re looking into some opportunities that will enable us to get our material out there faster and better than before.

And for you new subscribers, once again here’s the link to the outtakes from the studio sessions for Rory Rammer. These are being made available exclusively to subscribers of Breaking Radio Silence…not even the podcast gets this kind of content. And if you like it, let us know and we’ll be sure to include more like it in the future!

In the meantime, don’t forget our already extensive catalog!

The ARTC podcast for May featured Ghost Dance by Thomas E. Fuller, performed live at a special engagement for Georgia Pacific. Remember, the studio recording of Ghost Dance is available for sale at our website and at Audible.com! June’s podcast will be a special surprise. For everybody. Because I haven’t picked it yet. Doesn’t everyone love surprises??

Tune in on the second Thursday of each month at 8pm for more free audio drama from ARTC!

Snippets from the Static:

Haven’t heard Zap Thy Neighbor? Want to? Let us know and we’ll add it to the list of upcoming podcasts!
Off-dial Programming:
ARTC has had dozens, if not hundreds, of members in its run since 1984, and they don’t just do radio drama. Look for these ARTC members in performances around the Atlanta area…and beyond!

  • Former ARTC President Geoffrey M. Brown in his new production company, Dancing Monkey Cabaret!
  • Long time ARTC members Sarah Taylor and Oreta Taylor appearing with the Northside Festival Singers (YouTube video)
  • One of ARTC’s favorite musical guests, Juliana Finch, is touring around the country. See her in Decatur, GA, at Paris on June 21. Full tour calendar here!
